Property specialist SDL Group has been named one of the fastest growing businesses in the East Midlands, after seeing a 75 per cent uplift in profits over the past three years.
Having ranked 188th last year, the Nottingham-based firm has accelerated up to 15th place in this year’s East Midlands Top 200 Report that is produced by financial and business advisers Grant Thornton UK LLP in partnership with the CBI.
Now in its fifth year, the East Midlands Top 200 Report 2017 analyses the financial performance of the 200 businesses in Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire that have delivered the greatest, sustained profit growth between 2013 and 2016. It is the region’s only in-depth study into the East Midlands’ fastest growing companies by key sector and performance indicators, and delivers a barometer of overall economic performance, that highlights the contribution local companies, particularly SMEs, make to the economy.
Formerly known as Shepherd Direct Limited, the firm re-branded under the trading name SDL Group in 2016 and cemented its position as an industry leader with the acquisition of three businesses in 12 months. Since then, it has reported an operating profit of more than £3.5million, with its workforce nearly tripling since 2014.
Speaking after receiving the accolade, Colin Anderton, chief financial officer at SDL Group, said:
“We are all thrilled to have been recognised for our excellent growth. In the last year, we have added a number of well-established businesses to our portfolio, including the prominent auction specialist Graham Penny.
“Looking ahead, we will continue to focus on organic growth, while delivering excellent service to our customers.”
He added that in an uncertain political and economic climate, the group continually strived to identify new opportunities – from the government’s push on house building to the popularity of TV auction shows like Homes Under the Hammer.
“SDL Auctions can fill huge conference venues in places such as Pride Park or Nottingham Racecourse, which shows just how mainstream they have become,” he said.
“In response to this demand, we have just launched our new Auction Partners network, enabling more estate agents to move into this market.”
Mustafa Abdulhusein, head of advisory for Grant Thornton in the East Midlands, added: “SDL has had another successful year, growing both organically and through acquisition to record an impressive percentage growth in its profits.
“Government statistics support our Top 200 Report’s findings that the Nottinghamshire local economy is growing,” he adds. “The county’s business survival rate has shown to be higher than the national average, so it is no surprise that Nottinghamshire businesses are so well represented with 58 in the Top 200 this year.”
As well as appearing in the East Midlands Top 200 Report, SDL Group was also named one of the UK’s fastest-growing companies after being featured in the Sunday Times BDO Profit Track 100. Ranking 58th, it was one of just four businesses in the East Midlands to be included.
