Founded in 1989 as Direct Valuations, at SDL Risk Management we provided First Direct and HSBC with a national valuation solution. The model was the first of its kind – utilising a panel of national surveying firms to undertake surveys – and one which has proved incredibly successful. Over 25 years later, we continue to innovate, are proud to have retained the HSBC business, and now provide valuation and risk management services for many other lenders across the mortgage industry.
In 2002, the SDL Group launched Shepherd Chartered Surveyors in England and Wales – a network of surveyors, valuers, property agents and managers. Now known as SDL Surveying, our surveyors benefit from the forward thinking approach which defines the SDL Group – including the use of bespoke iPad software to reduce admin while improving accuracy, accountability and overall efficiency.
SDL Property Management brings together the SDL Group’s services in Lettings, PRS and Build to Rent, and Estate and Leaseholder Management. The Group’s nationwide coverage in property services enables us to provide industry-leading support in the development and management of investment solutions in the PRS and Build to Rent sector. Alongside this is our Estate Management division, incorporating the former CP Bigwood, Alexander Faulkner Partnership and SJ Higgins businesses. which manages over 30,000 units across the UK.
Identifying the potential to aggregate property management support across the UK, combining large-scale compliance and insurance support with personal, on the ground service, the SDL Group introduced SDL Property Partners in September 2017. Providing franchise services to previously self-employed property managers, ambitious property management employees, or sales and lettings agents looking to diversify their business, SDL Property Partners’ is new to the Estate Management industry, and offers a truly unique and differentiated service to developers, leaseholders and residents management companies in the UK.

SDL Auctions was established following the SDL Group’s acquisition of the CP Bigwood, Graham Penny Auctions and Humphreys of Chester in 2016. In 2017 alone, our combined SDL Auctions network have sold over 1000 lots, raising more than £600m in sales for our vendors across the country.
Our auctions are highly publicised both regionally and nationally to ensure our vendors achieve the best possible price for every property. As well as servicing a range of corporate lot introducers, we pride ourselves on bringing sales by auction into the mainstream. We are regularly featured on BBC One’s ‘Homes under the Hammer’, where we showcase how auctioning a property can be a genuine alternative to selling via private treaty.
Our Glasgow-based mortgage broker, moneyQuest, is an appointed representative of mortgage network Stonebridge Mortgage Solutions Ltd, providing across the market mortgage advice through telephone-based, qualified advisors. Brought in to the SDL Group in 2008, moneyQuest is one of the country’s largest independent mortgage brokers, and provides advice direct to consumers, as well as operating as the exclusive mortgage advisor for comparethemarket.com.
As an insurance broker, Pure Protect specialise in life insurance, critical illness cover and income protection. Our approach is to offer impartial advice to help consumers to find the most suitable products at the right price. We also partner with mortgage brokers, working alongside their existing processes, to reduce risk, serve their clients, and generate an attractive new income stream.
